History of the Center

The Los Angeles Equestrian Center, found in Griffith Park, is a tribute to the hard work and vision of many individuals who have contributed to its growth and success since its founding.

Al Garcia, Don Burt, and Charles Spira’s shared vision of building a modern equestrian facility in the heart of Los Angeles began to take shape in the early 1980s. As part of the center's development, the Equidome, a 3,500-seat indoor arena, was built in 1982. The Equidome quickly became a hub for various equestrian events, including shows, dressage competitions, rodeos, and even music concerts. The arena's versatility and 45,000 square feet (more than half the area of an LA city block) of floor space made it a highly sought-after venue for a range of activities.

Over the years, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center grew in prominence, hosting events such as "Equestfest," showcased equestrian participants of the Rose Parade, and the "Fiesta of the Spanish Horse," a fundraising event for cancer research.

In 1990, LAEC Incorporated was established, marking a significant milestone in the center's history. LAEC Incorporated played an essential role in furthering the center's mission and goals in partnership with the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Recreation and Parks.

The center's reputation as a premier hub for horse activities continued to soar, attracting a diverse community of horse enthusiasts, trainers, and boarders. With multiple stables with room for 500 horses, a show barn with 460 stalls, 16 areas including the Equidome, and a riding school, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center’s 75 acres have become synonymous with excellence in equestrian facilities over the last 44 years.

In May 2022, the Los Angeles Board of Recreation and Park Commissioners appointed ASM Global as the new facility manager of the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, signaling a new chapter in its evolution. This appointment reflected the City's ongoing commitment to keeping the center's reputation as a top-tier equestrian destination.

On February 1, 2024, at 12:01 am, ASM Global officially assumed full-time onsite management of the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, beginning an exciting new era for the facility. With ASM Global at the helm, the center looks forward to continuing its legacy as Southern California's premier equestrian complex.

Today, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center stands as a shining example of excellence in equestrian facilities offering a range of amenities with access to over 50 miles of Griffith Park horse trails. As the host to various horse shows, private events, and film location shoots, the center is still a cherished destination for horse owners, trainers, event organizers alike.
